LegalArt’s Free Legal Service Night for Artists and Arts Organizations is designed to empower local artists by providing them with the legal support and guidance they need to excel in their artistic endeavors. This one-night clinic is a vital resource for Miami’s art community, as it provides artists and arts organizations the opportunity to converse with attorneys and ask questions in a relaxed and informal environment.

Artists will be able to meet individually with a specialized attorney to discuss any current or pending legal issue in various areas of the law such as contracts, non-profit fiscal sponsorship, copyright, trademark and other intellectual property concerns, entertainment, real estate, estate planning, family, immigration, incorporation and other business related questions.

Participation is free with LegalArt Membership ($30 annual fee for artists, $45 for art organizations). Become a Member

• Artist Registration – Participants are required to register in advance to have their individual legal issues addressed at the Free Legal Service Night.
  To register: Fill out our quick, easy, and confidential New Artist Registration Form (scroll halfway down the page). Space is limited.
  The registration deadline is July 15th, 2012

Please note: This is a one time consultation, attorneys are not providing ongoing representation. Individuals will have appointments with their assigned attorneys.  Consultations will last 30-45 minutes.

Created in response to frequent inquiries to LegalArt from artists in the community, this SeminArt promises a clear vision of what artists should do to legally protect their practice in the following areas:

-What wording should you avoid or look out for?

About the Presenters
Nicole Milson and Sandra Newmeyer led LegalArt’s LegalLink Program during 2011-2012. Their extensive knowledge of Intellectual Property, Contracts, Consignment Agreements and Fair Use, combined with their experience in the local art community, promises a comprehensive SeminArt that you can immediately apply to your current work and business dealings.

Artists were paired with local attorneys who volunteered their time to provide advice during thirty to sixty minute consultations. Student volunteers from the University of Miami, School of Law helped with client intake and sat in on the sessions to experience the practical side of law in a non-classroom setting. Between appointments, the artists, attorneys, and students networked and enjoyed refreshments that were generously provided by Morgan Lewis.

“I am honored to be a part of LegalArt’s legal clinic,” said Jaime Rich-Vining, an intellectual property attorney with Friedland Vining and an adjunct professor at UM Law.   “Attorneys at the clinic do everything they can to ensure that the artists leave in a better position than when they came in. The clinic night is a great way to educate.” Natalia Napoleon, General Counsel and Vice President for Emerging Partners Group, liked that the event expressed to artists that their community cares about them. “We are invested in their success and we believe that their contribution to the future of this city is important.” Morgan Lewis host attorney David Hill noted that the clinic not only provides assistance to the artists, but also a unique opportunity for attorneys to exchange ideas with them.

Multimedia artist Diane Arrieta attended the event to address trademark concerns related to her business. She was grateful for the advice she received, and said her consultation was a success. “The lawyer was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I was also impressed at the number of law students in attendance; their interest and enthusiasm were refreshing.”

From the students’ perspective, “it helps us understand what kind of questions clients will ask,” said first-year law student Kwame Kandekore. First-year student Joe Bucciero attended the fall clinic and enjoyed it so much that he returned to volunteer in the spring. He noted that it was a good way to see attorneys interact with individuals in a natural setting.
