Pachi Giustinian is not only captivated by features of composition of light that are detectable by humans, but she is particularly interested in the ways that colors relate to sensations, feelings, sound and time. Her work is created with found objects that draw her attention through the color and shape they restrain. Color categories and physical specifications of color are also associated with objects, materials and light sources, based on their physical properties such as light absorption, reflection, or emission spectra.

By abstracting these objects from their everyday use she transforms them highlighting their visual characteristics and challenging the structure of our subjective color experience. Finding meaning in the forgotten and trivial allows the accident to occur, creating beauty. The appropriate error comes along and the unconscious decisions of utilizing that object finally find sense. The meaning of these objects is modified and combined with the new significance given by the mere fact of its existence.

Every collision leaves a trace behind: debris, a trail of residue that marks the site where violence took place. The work of Manny Prieres is that sort of remnant, the product of the clash between a traditional, temperamental heritage, and an intense, idiosyncratic counterculture. During the process of this convergence, a series of artifacts are created. They stand at the threshold of a new folklore: they are the iconography of a new tradition.

In this sense, Manny Prieres is an archaeologist, one that has painstakingly and lovingly preserved the objects of an unexplored civilization: their symbols, their gods, their rituals, and their lore. These artifacts bring up tales from the artist’s personal history, yet as a whole they create new narratives that, despite having hybrid elements from multiple sources of influence, are nevertheless moving towards an entirely different place.

They were raised with intense psychological and spiritual discussions regarding behavior, relationships, creativity, and truth.

The sisters’ work has been included in the international exhibitions “Uncertain States of America: American Art in the 3rd Millennium” curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Daniel Birnbaum, and Gunnar B. A Miami native, Pioneer holds a B.A. in Psychology and a Masters in Public Health and Epidemiology. The focus of his work resides in the intersecting properties of contemporary dance and theater to channel topics of social awareness through functional multimedia and film. His projects find their niche in the portability of the messages and the way the themes discussed, maintain significance and identification within the current social climate. He has created work for the International Fringe Arts Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, Museum of Contemporary Art, Little Haiti Cultural Center, Adrienne Arsht Center, Miami Beach Convention Center, and Bass Museum of Art. FL Dance Masters accredited, Pioneer began dancing with Edwin and Gaile Holland, later coached by Michael Langlois and additional training at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA). Pioneer has worked with Jubilee Dance Theatre, Dance Now! Miami, Next Step Dance, Brazz Dance Theater, Ballet Etoile and has performed on tour in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain and Mexico City. His work includes, Reaching the Surface, an evening-length work reducing HIV/AIDS stigma with artists either infected or affected by HIV; Phallussy in the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Miami Made Weekend; and 42: A Stonewall Prospective presented at the Bass Museum of Art; and Miami Open Stage with his piece Mother-Son(days). Pioneer believes a multichanneled introduction of medium to audiences fosters greater absorption. This contributes to the community at-large, rather than relying on an already-knowledgeable arts community. pioneerwinter.org

Lucas Leyva is a filmmaker and retired playwright from Miami, FL. Twenty-one of his plays were produced across seven states and one was a Heidenman Finalist.
He is the founder and Minister of the Interior of the Borscht Film Festival, called the “hippest, most eclectic and electric movie festival in South Florida” and “Miami’s alt culture summit” by the Miami Herald and named “Miami’s Best Film Festival” and compared to “Sundance on psychotropic mushrooms” by the Miami New Times.

In 2011 he officially founded the Borscht Corporation, an interdisciplinary microbudget independent production house that helped create over 40 short projects in Miami, FL in its first year. He is also a published poet, playwright, and has directed musical plays at the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Recently, Lucas was named one of the “top 100 creatives” in Miami by Cultist, “top 20 artists under 40″ by the Miami Herald, one of the “power 30 under 30,” “Miami’s champion of independent film” by CoolHunting, and one of “33 Emerging Creative Minds” by SoFi Magazine.

As ½ of MayerLeyva, his music videos have premiered on Stereogum, NME, Vice and Rolling Stone and have been named to various year-end Top 10 video lists, including IFC, as well as exhibited in the Guggenheim museums in New York, Berlin, Bilbao, and Venice as part of a creative video biennial. He balances his artistic career in Miami with his career as a midfielder for the Liverpool football club and the Brazilian national team.

Jiae Hwang investigates hypothetical and open ended structures that address issues such as technology, the past, the future and the viability of those notions in a time when the demand for “speed” has rendered them almost irrelevant.

She explores different media (drawing, painting, video and Installation) in an effort to sustain her place as an artist in the present while analyzing and proposing post-ironic possibilities.

Jiae Hwang was born in Seoul Korea in 1981, and grew up in Korea and Space Cost in Florida U.S.A. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, Serpentine Gallery (London), Tomio Koyama Gallery (Tokyo), Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery (Paris), Fredric Snitzer Gallery (Miami) as well as MoCA North Miami, Rubell Contemporary Art Foundation. She currently lives and works in Miami.

Residency Period: February 2012-January 2013
Patricia Margarita Hernandez was born and raised in Miami, FL. She is a first generation Cuban-American working artist who through the guile and cunning of her splendid charisma was able to lull the governing bodies of various academic scholarships and grants funds into giving her money for school. The payoff was sweet for all parties involved since Ms. Hernandez graduated with cum laude honors from the New World School of the Arts (NWSA).

During her attendance at NWSA, she was student body president and her tenure as student leader was not lost in the largely apolitical je ne sais quoi ambience of the campus. Her focus was in integration and was successful in creating many opportunities for growth and development across the disciplines of music, theater, dance and the visual arts.

She currently works in Miami in the fields of video and sculpture alongside writer and poet Abel Folgar. Her solo work, as well as the collaborative efforts with Mr. Folgar has been exhibited throughout South Florida. Her work takes its roots from combating feminist ideals, donks, Miami Bass, the punk rock do it yourself ethic (DIY), personal limits, the enjoyment of food and fun. Ms. Hernandez also co-directs the end / SPRING BREAK. This is a nomadic artist-run project committed to developing new modes of considering issues in contemporary art and culture within South Florida communities. Their focus is to develop programming that seeks to engage our audience as participants and elicit a discussion surrounding the thematic concept chosen for that event.

Ms. Hernandez is a focused individual with an understanding that daily life and minute-to-minute situations provide chances for knowledge, knowledge she readily absorbs. Her goal, aside from creating, is to continue to reflect the energy of her community through creativity, at least until the governing body of the Florida Lottery agrees with the numbers she picks.
